It might require a complete overhaul of the xp mechanics. This might not be feasible, but I don't know anything about coding. 

DreadReapr might have the best solution, but I like manual combat.

20 XP for a T1 seems reasonable to me. If you used T1s to kill that T1, you would probably need more than 5-6 hits to kill it, so reducing the XP counter further would limit the XP you could get in a "normal" situation, that's why we don't decrease it further.

As far as I know, you get the XP from abilities only once per ability so you can't exploit it more.

I agree there still is an incentive to stall battles and there is still some free XP like Steal Enchantment but I think that does not lead to gaps that are too big to prevent a player that does not exploit every small breach to win. And in some cases, we do not have tools to further balance things (for instance we can't remove XP specifically from Steal Enchantment).

best balance mod for pbem is all auto combats, but nobody listen. this manual battle exploits will last forever no matter what u do. 
the weak army start settings is really no fun to me, also if u lose some early units u end up with very slow recover which most likely will cost u the game. u cant even send extra units to spot the ai camps bcz u would need all units to battle early game.
pbem higher tier units are rarely seen, and the weak army start makes it worse.

The balance mod prevents leaders and heroes from gaining xp by using touch or spell-like abilities, and I think you decreased xp interactions between units. There is still incentive to stall battles.

Example: My leader attacks a T1 using his ranged weapon. He shoots three times (doing minimal damage) and gets 9xp. Then my hero attacks the same unit using his ranged weapon, and he gets 6xp. I think the xp counter is exhausted, so I can finally kill the T1 for 5xp. 20xp for a T1?

Another example: My forge priest casts guardian flame, and he gets 4xp. Then my reanimator casts steal enchantment on the unit guarded by flames, and he gets 4xp. The forge priest casts dispel magic on the reanimator, and he gets 4xp. And so on and so forth. (I don't know how often you can do this before the xp counter for each unit is exhausted) A tanky unit can stall the battle just moving back and forth in front of the hostile kobold taking away its action points. Maybe the kobold gets to level up before I convert it. I think the Firstborn stalling the battle gets xp just for getting hit.

I don't know if people really want to play like that but if they want to win the game there is incentive to do so.

It is my opinion that some games can be decided rather early, often before the opposing players interact with each other. I think there are balance issues with xp farming, overly powerful leaders/heros, and rewards from treasure sites. I don't think this makes for very good or interesting matches. DreadReapr and I had no major battles. (The biggest battle involved five units) 

I choose starting conditions that I consider favorable and give me an advantage in an arms race. At the beginning of the game, and with the settings I use, dwarf necromancer has the most advantages and the least disadvantages. This has a snowball effect amplified by balance issues.

I'm too lazy to comment on every screenshot, but it looks like Turn 17 marks the beginning of the end for the Dread Reapers. Also, my opponent has an Undead problem throughout the game.

Gotta restart the turn. Might be coincidence, but it seems that the game keeps crashing more often than usual for about a month or so.

I'm not sure how often we were able to reproduce it but it has happened quite often with people just playing normally, see the issue 2/ described here: http://aow.triumph.net/forums... />Recently, it had happened only with host in #2 slot though. And it does look like higher chances of bug if you add the turn timer after the game is created but before the 1st turn is played.

Yes. During the first game I must have changed the timer after the game had been created, probably before Reapr joined. How often did you reproduce it?

Yes, it's not a 100% reproducible bug. You were still host on #1 slot and turn timer had been enabled in the starting settings (not enabled after the game is created by modifying the settings)?

That's probably because your 1st turn was skipped blackwill, that prevented the game from being generated. And your turn was skipped probably because you enabled the turn timer from the start, which often leads to the turn of the 1st player being skipped (known and reported bug).
So yes, you can only rehost, and disable turn timer until the 1st turn is fully played.
