After 34 turns I managed to defeat his main army! Sadly I forgot to make a screenshot of the victory screen. Perhaps Bethrezen can confirm this result.

River rapids basically cut the map in half and made it unpassable except for flyers.
I had to watch out for the Sorcerer's flying heroes and summons.
There was really only one land route (through a Giant dwelling that I bought as vassal).
So little or no room for smart strategy - I basically couldn't go anywhere else with my land based army so I headed in straight after being able to obtain some strong T3 units, mainly through quests.

I took a city and decided to hold and plunder it, badly needing cash to sustain my large army.
The Sorcerer came in to reclaim it.
The final battle involved all of our leaders / heroes (my stacks: 6/6/5 vs. his 6/6/2) was a Probable Victory when I finally attacked -- but still close I saw in replay, and a classic "shock vs. melee" battle.
Both leaders ended up in the void. But my surviving force was too strong, included both heroes and a few Knights & was now too close to Bethrezen's capital and he surrendered the turn after - which was nothing but reasonable.
